Trans Woman Who Was Caught On Video Being Attacked Last Month Found Fatally Shot In Dallas

Last month, a video went viral showing a group of men assaulting a trans woman. Now, a month later, she has been found dead.

23-year-old Muhlaysia Booker was found Saturday morning after Dallas police responded to reports of a shooting. While she was not carrying identification, the medical examiner was able to positively identify her.

The news is absolutely heartbreaking.

Booker was attacked on April 12th, outside an apartment complex in Dallas. Video of the incident was recorded and shared on social media.

The video shows multiple people punching and kicking Booker as bystanders watched and the assailants used homophobic and transphobic slurs. She ended up suffering a fractured wrist and a concussion.

It was shown on CBS DFW, but we should warn you that it is graphic.

One man was arrested for the crime at the time, with police investigating more. Edward Thomas, who was accused of the assault, said that he was given $200 to carry out the attack.

Dallas police have said there is nothing connecting Thomas to the murder, however.

Mike Rawlings, the mayor of Dallas, has called on citizens to report any information they may have regarding the crime to the police.

After her assault, Booker gave a statement about the conditions for trans people in this country.

“This time I can stand before you; whereas in other scenarios, we are at a memorial,”

Muhlaysia Booker said.

“This has been a rough week for myself, the transgender community and also the City of Dallas. But I want to sincerely thank all of you guys for coming out, for support and fairness.”

“And just as I am overwhelmed by your presence, your donation to support of my transgender family and allies who want to see justice served in this case. I will remain strong with your support.”

Police are still investigating other suspects for the attack in April and are asking for the community to come forward with information on the murder.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, three other transgender black women have been fatally shot this year. In 2018, at least 26 transgender people were murdered.

Transphobia isn’t a joke. It’s deadly.

Booker’s father, Pierre Booker, told NBC DFW that his daughter had been attacked before.

However, the most recent was the most violent.

“This don’t need to happen to nobody else’s kid, so we pray that everything comes out justifiable. We know the Lord works in mysterious ways.”
