A shocking new video showing a California gym owner hurling racial epithets and physically threatening an Asian woman has sparked outrage on the internet.
The incident occurred in a parking lot in Irvine, California.
WARNING: NSFW language and racial slurs
According to her YouTube caption, the victim said the incident was sparked by the man refusing to socially distance.
“This racist man ambushed me in the parking lot, chanting racial slurs and threatening to punch me in the face after he refused to practice social distancing”
The video opens with the man telling the woman to “go back to China” as his companion, a White woman, waves a sarcastic goodbye at her.
The man then became agitated he was being filmed and got out of his car, charging at the woman while hurling an anti-Asian racial slur.
“Get back in your car you stupid g**k.”
The man then got back in his car and continued yelling at the woman for filming him.
“Are you really that stupid? You know that recording doesn’t do anything.”
He then drove off while blaming her for the pandemic.
“Thanks for giving my country COVID. Have a great day.”
Both the man and his companion have since been identified by social media users as Brian Kranz, a fitness instructor and owner of Red Fitness in Irvine, and Janelle Hinshaw, a psychologist who works with teens.
Both individuals’ online presences have since been taken down, including social media platforms and business websites. Kranz’s business was so flooded with negative reviews on Yelp the company locked the account from further commentary.
People have also called for the National Academy of Sports Medicine to revoke his credentials as a trainer.
As for Hinshaw, an interview in which she discussed how art therapy helped her recover from trauma has been removed. People have called for her license to practice as a psychologist be revoked.
So much for “that recording doesn’t do anything,” right?
In fact, the woman’s recording of Kranz and Hinshaw went so viral even Representative Katie Porter—in whose district the incident occurred—spoke out about it on Twitter about the racism on display.
I’ve stood in that exact parking lot in our district. Seeing this racist behavior in our community is saddening and infuriating. Hate has no place here, and I’ll always stand with our Asian-American neighbors. https://t.co/nmU5QQEHGh

I think he should be required to attend 3 months of 24/7 in patient counseling and anti-bias training along with a month as a volunteer at a COVID ward in a hospital treating patients and another month taking care of four teenagers. Then see if he’s changed his behavior.

Ass it turns out, NASM will revoke a certification for their personal trainers for ethical reasons. I know this because I am on the phone with them right now, and the operator has me on hold while he shows his bosses this very thread. 😂

When you have a plank of wood laying in the yard for a few months, you lift it up and all the roaches and crawling insects that were hiding come out. That’s what this government did.

Asian-Americans built that part of America.
It's shameful how people do this kind of stuff out of some crazy "patriotism". But, actual patriotism means loving your country enough to learn her history.

Looking forward to the inevitable "this isn't who I really am" speech from this guy when he discovers video does do something.

As of this writing, neither Kranz nor Hinshaw have commented publicly on the incident.
It is unclear if Hinshaw will be allowed to continue to work with children after her participation in the racist incident.
