Chicago Cop Under Investigation After Video Shows Him Brutally Slamming Man To Ground

A Chicago police officer is under fire online after video footage has gone viral.

The video was shot on Thanksgiving.

In it, the officer is seen bodyslamming a citizen into the pavement while arresting them for drinking alcohol in public.

Onlookers gasp and shout out in shock as the officer picks up his suspect before slamming him onto the pavement.

The man then lies on the street, unmoving, for the remainder of the video while the police officer watches him.

Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability is now looking into the incident. In the meantime, the officer has been “relieved of police powers” according to CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Guglielmi continued:

“The incident is under investigation as the actions in the video are concerning. If wrongdoing is discovered, officers will be held accountable.”

The police claim the injured 29 year-old—who was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with minor injuries—licked the arresting officer’s face before spitting in his eyes and mouth.

After being released from the hospital after several hours, Buzzfeed reports the man was arrested by police “on suspicion of aggravated battery to a police officer and drinking in a public way.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot wrote about the incident on Twitter, saying:

“While a single video does not depict the entirety of the interactions between the police and the individual, this particular video is very disturbing. It is my expectation that the investigation will be comprehensive and expedited so that the public may gain a complete picture of what happened.”

Bystander Jovonna Jamison said the man had been drinking and speaking on the phone when the officer walked up and grabbed the drink out of his hand.

She commented to The Chicago Tribune:

“I’m not really surprised because it happens so much in Chicago, but I didn’t think I would ever see it front and center.”
