In Bradley Cooper’s upcoming directorial debut, A Star is Born, Lady Gaga plays a musician who falls in love with an aging star (played by Cooper) who’s struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Early reviews of the film have been overwhelmingly positive, with many specifically praising Gaga’s performance. To bring her role to life, it’s possible the singer was able to channel many of her real-life experiences with drugs, which she has been very open about in interviews.
In a profile by the Los Angeles Times, Gaga spoke of the plethora of drugs that became available to her when she became famous:
There was a buffet of options. It’s very lonely being a performer. There’s a certain loneliness that I feel, anyway — that I’m the only one that does what I do. So it feels like no one understands. And the urge to use is because you’re searching for a way to quell the pain.
Thank you, I forgot about this interview...I know she said she likes to take alcohol/drugs to free her mind creativity but maybe not anymore— Devon ? (@devonmonster_) August 31, 2017
Fortunately, Gaga believes she was able to avoid the worst of what she was offered because she had been around drugs since she was young:
But I had already partied when I was younger so I didn’t dabble. I was able to avoid it because I did it when I was a kid.
Gaga wouldn’t let anything stop her from pursuing her goals, however:
When I wanted to become a singer, I hit the concrete running. I was dragging my piano from dive bar to dive bar to play music. I was calling people, faking being my own manager to get gigs. I really believed in myself that I could do this and that I wasn’t going to stop until I made it. … The truth is, if we were not sitting here today and I hadn’t sold as many records as I have, I’d still be in a bar somewhere playing the piano and singing. It’s just who I want to be.
I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY FOR BOTH GAGA AND BRADLEY!!! ESPECIALLY FOR GAGA BC THIS IS HER LITERAL DREAM!!! JUST 10 YRS AGO SHE WAS GIGGING IN DIVE BARS WHERE SHE CAN & LOOK AT HER NOW!!! IM CRYING!!!!! I LOVE YOU GAGA!!#AStarIsBorn #VeniceFilmFestival #LadyGaga— ⭐xoxo, Lyla⭐ (@IMissGaga) August 31, 2018
That’s not to say the singer didn’t have her problems early on, however. On an episode of The Howard Stern Show in July 2011, Gaga commented:
I was so unhappy. I think that I was lonely and there was something about the drugs that made me feel like I had a friend. … I did it all alone in my apartment while I wrote music. And you know what? I regret every line I ever did. … Don’t touch it. It’s the devil.
Thank you so much, I forgot about that interview, I honestly just want to be as brave and creative as her but I guess drugs aren't how to— Devon ? (@devonmonster_) August 31, 2017
