Man Dies After Falling Into Giant Vat Of Acid In Industrial Accident

Daniel Hill, a 54-year-old man from South Lyon, Michigan, died on February 9 after falling into a vat of sulfuric acid at the Michigan Seamless Tube factory where he worked.

It’s unknown how long Hill was in the vat before he was discovered, but the coworkers who found and pulled him out all suffered “160-degree chemical burns” upon contact.

South Lyon Fire Chief Robert Vogel told The Detroit News:

“Other employees, co-workers saw him in the tank. He was completely submerged and was 100 percent covered in burns. The gentleman was trying to get out. They ran and grabbed him and pulled him out.”

According to Vogel, it seemed at first like Hill might be alright, but the burns overcame him in the end:

“He was speaking when we were there. He was walking and talking. Unfortunately, he passed. It was pretty extreme burns.”

Hill was rushed to the University of Michigan hospital, where he sadly died later that night.

South Lyon Police Chief Chris Sovik told The Detroit Free Press:

“This really is a tragedy and affects all of us.”

A statement released by the local fire department states that the Hill’s company, Michigan Seamless Tube, is investigating the “serious industrial accident” to ensure nothing of this nature ever happens again.

Friends of Hill’s have set up a GoFundMe page to help support the wife, two children, and two grandchildren he’s left behind.

Part of Daniel’s obituary reads:

“He will be remembered as being a loving husband, a wonderful father, and the best grandfather to his grandchildren, which he called ‘his little angels’. Daniel was very generous to everyone he met and a very dedicated, hard worker.”

“He served in the Army in the motor pool and was proud of his service. He loved fishing and boating during his free time and had a passion for animals, especially dogs. His dogs Chloe, Ally, and Bella made him very happy.”

“Daniel was affectionately known as “Moose” and will be missed by all who knew him.”

Twitter users offered their condolences to Hill’s family.

The GoFundMe page has nearly reached it’s $30k goal.

Hill’s friends hope to raise the money “to help with all expenses and to maintain their lives during their grief.”

Rest in peace Daniel—and all the best to his friends and family in this difficult time.
