Former first lady Barbara Bush's funeral was held on Saturday, April 21, in Houston, Texas. President Trump wasn't in attendance, but first lady Melania Trump traveled to the Lone Star State to represent the White House in his stead. While there, she sat next to former President Barack Obama, and many observers noted how happy the first lady seemed while talking with him rather.
This is Melania and Obama sitting together today at former First Lady Barbara Bush's funeral. Have you ever, ever, EVER seen Melania smile like this, and look this relaxed, beside her own husband? Ever? pic.twitter.com/9qYLT2glIH— Steve Silberman (@stevesilberman) April 21, 2018
The fact that President Trump couldn't make it to the funeral is actually not a big deal—President Obama missed Nancy Reagan's funeral, and most other former Presidents have also been absent from similar occasions. White House Press Secretary Lindsay Walters commented in a statement:
To avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family and friends attending the service, president Trump will not attend.
Many former Presidents and first ladies were in attendance, however, and Melania seemed to be enjoying herself.
What an image given the tweets statements, and speeches in the past 445 days. Wonder what President Obama just said to Mrs. Trump.... pic.twitter.com/lnI0GGpX7n— Yashar Ali ? (@yashar) April 21, 2018
Twitter was delighted by the image of Melania and Obama chatting.
I’m certain demented #dumpsterfire @potus would hate if we made this picture of a solo @FLOTUS glowing and looking happier than she’s never been next to the great @BarackObama at #BarbaraBushFuneral go viral. pic.twitter.com/ois8g67Mg1— Lesley Abravanel (@lesleyabravanel) April 21, 2018
Funerals are usually a sad occasion.

Of course, once the service started, everyone in the chapel quieted down to pay their respects. President Trump even chimed in from the "Southern White House"—his privately owned resort in Florida.
Heading to the Southern White House to watch the Funeral Service of Barbara Bush. First Lady Melania has arrived in Houston to pay our respects. Will be a beautiful day!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 21, 2018
Not long afterwards, Trump went on a Twitter rampage against the New York Times…

For everyone who was able to attend, it will surely be a day to remember.
