We’ve all wondered at some point whether a desire to be spanked has anything to do with voting Democrat or Republican, right? Fortunately, a study by Justin Lehmiller, a research fellow at the Kinsey Institute, has finally revealed the differences in sexual fantasies between people who typically vote for the left or right.

For his book, Tell Me What You Want, Lehmiller surveyed 4,175 adults in what he describes as the “largest and most comprehensive survey of sexual fantasies ever conducted in the United States.”

In an article for Politico, he says individuals from both political parties tend to have the same number of sexual fantasies per week, but the content of those fantasies tend to differ based on political mindset.
Republicans tend to daydream about sex scenarios that involve infidelity or unmarried coupling:
“Things like infidelity, orgies and partner swapping, from 70s-style ‘key parties’ to modern-day forms of swinging. Republicans also reported more fantasies with voyeuristic themes, including visiting strip clubs and practising something known as ‘cuckolding’, which involves watching one’s partner have sex with someone else.”

Democrats like the idea of being spanked while Republicans fantasize about being cuckolded. https://t.co/SEqratmMhQ

Democrats, meanwhile, are into BDSM:
“From bondage to spanking to dominance-submission play. The largest Democrat-Republican divide on the BDSM spectrum was in masochism, which involves deriving pleasure from the experience of pain.”

Actually quite interesting. R's want affairs, D's want BDSM. https://t.co/2MjeOgqAl4

For psychologists and researchers like Lehmiller, the reason for these differences is pretty easy to pinpoint. He believes people tend to fantasize about what they can’t have. For Republicans, “who celebrate the nuclear family, marriage and monogamy,” that’s cheating and unrestricted sex. For Democrats, “who value equality,” the idea of a “dom” and “sub” seems tantalizingly forbidden.
This is… interesting ? https://t.co/4xWDu881Mw

Perhaps most shocking in these divisive times, however, was the study’s revelation that 10% of participants fantasized about sleeping with a politician, with 17% of Republicans and 27% of Democrats saying they cross party lines when doing so.
I AM NOT SURPRISED BUT CONCERNED. https://t.co/QMszu2RdQC

Finally, an issue America is willing to reach across the aisle to accomplish.
