On the evening of January 28, Valerie Reyes, 24, was speaking to her mother over the phone. While sitting at home in New Rochelle, New York, she told her mother she was feeling “paranoid.”
“I’m afraid someone is going to murder me.”
A week later, Valerie’s body was discovered inside a suitcase on the side of a road in Connecticut. Now, authorities are trying to find out what might have left Reyes so terrified.
Reyes reportedly told Norma Sanchez, her mother, that there was nobody threatening her, but still Sanchez had to wonder:
“We wonder, ‘who made her feel this way?’”
I can’t imagine what her family are going through rn... RIP Valerie Reyes I’m so sorry...— Victoria (@Sarah_smiles105) February 7, 2019
It's just very strange to "have a feeling" then end up in a bag days later. Curious about her behind the scenes relationships.— JayJayAllday (@nittsallgood) February 8, 2019
The day after the conversation with her mother, Reyes didn’t show up to work at Barnes & Noble. A local bank, however, captured footage of the young woman passing by on January 30, showing she was very much alive two days after her “paranoid” call.
When they find the psycho who killed Valerie Reyes, I hope they burn where they stand. RIP mama 💔— Aly Aquarius (@ItsAlykazam) February 7, 2019
After that, Reyes’ whereabouts were unknown until February 5, when her body was discovered in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Rest In Peace to Valerie Reyes. I reposted her missing photo and was completely shocked to find out the circumstances of her murder. What scares me even more is that there’s a murderer roaming the streets in Westchester County and that makes me uneasy— LinLin (@linette_peralta) February 8, 2019
Police discovered Valerie’s body with hands and feet bound, and believe her death was the result of a homicide. Though no suspects have yet been announced, investigators have been gathering large amounts of evidence and hope to bring her killer to justice as soon as possible.
Even if you did not know Valerie which I myself don’t either, it’s sad and scary that something like this happened to someone from our community. Rest In Peace angel. Sending condolences to the Reyes family.— erica♡ (@__ericasilva) February 7, 2019
In the meantime, crowds have gathered at candlelight vigils to pay their respects and say goodbye.
