*Warning: Deadpool 2 spoilers ahead!*
Deadpool 2 arrived in theaters this past Friday, May 18, starring Ryan Reynolds as the incorrigible merc with a mouth for the second time. While watching the film, however, almost nobody noticed Reynolds playing a second, uncredited role that should get comic book fans pretty excited!
Rhett Reese, who wrote the new movie, revealed during a New York press junket that Reynolds also provides the voice for Juggernaut, the long-time X-men villain who makes a surprise appearance in the film’s final act. He commented:
Ryan Reynolds ended up voicing Juggernaut, if you didn’t know that. That was Ryan’s voice as the Juggernaut, and he did the facial capture for him. I don’t know how they did the physical motion-capture – I don’t think that was Ryan.
Ryan Reynolds is the main actor in Deadpool 2, but he also was one of the producers and one of the writers. He also provided the voice for Juggernaut, which was modulated to make it deeper, and did the motion-capture performance for the character's face.— Conservative in Utah (@ConservativeUT) May 20, 2018
The Juggernaut, a relative of Charles Xavier’s, has always been a fan favorite, but his last appearance on screen, in X-men The Last Stand, left some viewers unsatisfied.
Reese and Paul Wernick, co-screenwriters, saw Deadpool 2 as a challenge to reboot the character:
We committed to it pretty early on, because he’s never been done justice until now.
We always wanted to see a CG Juggernaut, so we finally got that. We also really needed to balance the scales in act three, between Deadpool and friends and little Firefist who has cool powers, but we needed to make it a fair fight.
What greater force of nature than Juggernaut?
Is the “big one” that Ryan Reynolds provided the voice for Juggernaut?— Collin DeLade (@collindelade) May 19, 2018
Juggernaut’s appearance also gives die-hard fans one of the Marvel cannon’s classic show-downs: Juggernaut vs. Colossus.
It also gave us a chance for him to fight Colossus, two big behemoths going at it in act three is never a bad thing.

Director David Leitch told UNILAD that Reynold’s decision to keep this added cameo secret was no surprise to anyone who knows him:
I think there’s a self-deprecating nature to Deadpool and to Ryan that’s charming and, by the way, genuine.
I think that’s one of the most beautiful things about Deadpool and I think Ryan gets that and is self-aware enough to make fun of himself and I think that’s the sign of a good human being, the ability to laugh at yourself.
deadpool 2 was so satisfying in terms of action and humorous scenes. Ryan Reynolds puts justice in his old movie roles. watch out for the juggernaut ?— Justin John (@TheJustinDlgn) May 16, 2018
Reynolds continues his reign as kind of our hearts. Just for the heck of it, here’s a recent video of Ryan appearing on a Korean singing competition, King of the Mask Singers.
