On Thursday, October 11, a hailstorm barrelled over Queensland, Australia. The storm ripped the roofs off of houses and caused large amounts of devastation as it went.
Fiona Simpson from Kingaroy, Queensland, was driving home with her daughter when the storm struck. The storm was so intense she had to pull over and, before long, the hail broke through several windows of the car.
Simpson’s daughter was in the backseat, so the mother had to act quickly.
Barely thinking, Fiona jumped into the back and shielded her child with her body.
She later told Insider:
“I’m just a mum—you do anything you can to protect your child, no matter what, even at your own expense, and I would do it again. I jumped over the back seat, over her car seat, holding my body over hers.”
The hailstones pelting the roof were so loud that Simpson couldn’t hear her baby’s screams.
When the storm was finally finished, her back had taken a rather severe beating.
Simpson later posted photos of her injuries to Facebook.
I’ve learnt my lesson today, NEVER drive in a hail storm! We parked on the side of the road when the storm got to heavy...Posted by Fiona Simpson on Thursday, October 11, 2018
In her post, Fiona says she learned a valuable lesson:

Fortunately, these two made it out safe and sound!
Twitter was incredibly impressed with Simpson’s bravery.
Fiona Simpson could be the toughest mother in Queensland. Caught in yesterday’s crazy storm at Kingaroy, she shielded her baby from pelting hail after it smashed her car windows. @7NewsBrisbane pic.twitter.com/dzwKfmKouh

And one person suggested the mother’s selfless act may help during the years ahead…
That kid does anything wrong in the future and she’s going to say “I protected you from hail with my own body and you can’t clean your room just once?” Your mom’s a saint, kid. Better take care of her!

We’re glad they both will be ok, thanks to the courage of one very strong mother!
