During a press conference on the White House lawn on Thursday, April 12, President Trump joked about the possibility of extending his Presidency to 16 years.

The comment came while Trump was speaking about how effective his administration was at rolling back regulations:
We’ve cut more regulations in a year and a quarter than any administration, whether itÂ’s four years, eight years or, in one case, 16 years,” he said. “Should we go back to 16 years? Congressman, can we have that extended? The last time I jokingly said
that, the papers started saying 'he's got despotic tendencies!' No, I'm not looking to do it, unless you want to do it.
Twitter wasn't too amused by the President's joke.
He keeps bringing this up. He wants to be a corrupt dictator who lives off backs of his people.— GDT (@GDT0429) April 12, 2018

Also, some people couldn't help but point out the inaccuracy of Trump's statement.
And FDR was elected 4 times but only serve 12 years. I really wish this guy had a brain— gvivaldi (@gvivaldi) April 13, 2018
No president has EVER served 16 years. FDR served 12 years 2.5 months. FDR died a few months into his 4th term, but Trump keeps repeating the 16 years lie.— Karl Darrin Devlet (@hesanihilist) April 12, 2018
Still, perhaps the President was just making a strangely-timed joke…
It was clearly a joke....— Yankees27 (@yankees1991) April 12, 2018
To be fair, he posed it as joke. A really frightening unfunny joke— suzsolon (@SuzanneAubin) April 12, 2018
Maybe the purest way Twitter expressed its reactions to the President was through GIFs…
This isn't the first time Trump has joked about his presidential term. After the recent Chinese elections he broached the subject to a similar reaction:
OMG how much lower will Trump bring the institution of the US presidency?!— Theodosios Ellin (@TheodosiosEllin) March 4, 2018
Some believe the President makes jokes like this to "test the waters."
Bragging about how easy it is to tear things down because has built nothing, and the only thing he does want to build is a wall as memorial to his inabilities.— pamela ritch (@pi2fly) April 12, 2018
He has the luxury of floating "jokes" like being a despot to test the waters, because if you're ok with it, he is too.
People wake up this is how fascism start. He picks on Judicial system then press then Govt then he supposedly jokes about staying 16 years 4 those who think this is a joke beware many countries have gone down this path before & dictatorships are born that way— Val Marq (@valmarq72) April 12, 2018
In short, Twitter had a pretty succinct response to the President's idea:
