While many of the exemplary television shows to receive a coveted Emmy award last week were met with two thumbs way up, at least one actor gave a category an index and a ring finger down.

Renowned actor Antonio Banderas received a 2018 Emmy nomination for his role as iconic painter Pablo Picasso. Genius, on the National Geographic channel, explored the work and muses of the famed Spanish painter.

The beloved Banderas did not win the Emmy for his portrayal of the legendary post-impressionist, but he nonetheless left his own impression.

How?

His clapping.

Watch video below.

Yes, we’re sure his clapping method was just his own idiosyncrasy, but if not…

…just what was the legendary Antonio Banderas doing?

His roles in Spy Kids and multiple Shrek movies have solidified his place in the hearts of so many movie goers, but some were curious as to just what happened.

Some even dared to ask if Banderas knew how to clap at all.

It was compared to another legendarily awkward celebrity clap:

Seriously, the similarities caught some attention.

If an actor’s performance is moving enough to earn an Emmy nomination, do they not subsequently earn the right to clap however they want?

You do you, Mr. Banderas.
