A United States border patrol agent in Laredo, Texas, has been arrested and charged with killing four women and nearly killing a fifth who managed to escape.
Juan David Ortiz was found hiding from authorities in his truck outside of a hotel. He’s currently being held on a $2.5 million bail.
His victims are believed to be sex workers whom he lured under the guise of being a customer.
According to District Attorney Isidro Alaniz, the would-be victim, Erika Pena:
…went willingly with him and then while she was with him things started to get dangerous for her and when she tried to escape from him at a gas station that’s when she ran into a trooper. In our opinion he is the sole person responsible for this horrific serial killing spree.
Ortiz alluded to one of Pena’s friends and coworkers who had been found dead the week before. He then attempted to restrain Pena inside the vehicle.
Ortiz’s crimes are certain to stir the debate around immigration, since Donald Trump has used instances of undocumented immigrants’ crimes to characterize undocumented people as a whole. He even began his campaign by calling them murderers and rapists.
Now, people are demanding the same standard for Ortiz.
Shocking story breaking of #BorderPatrol agent Ortiz accused of serial killings of 4 (or more!) migrant women along Mexican border. Must be investigated & prosecuted w same vigor & passion as if it were the other way around & killer was a migrant & officers the victims. Justice.— Geraldo Rivera (@GeraldoRivera) September 16, 2018
Maybe we need to make this a bigger deal. @realDonaldTrump made a big deal over Molly Tibbets and the fact that an "immigrant" killed her and now we have one of his precious border control people killing woman.. considered serial!— Jotaohacheene (@jotaohacheene) September 16, 2018
Let’s use @realDonaldTrump logic and lump every border patrol agent with this insane human and suggest they are all murderers and we should throw the lot of them in jail...— The Majority (@TheMajorityUSA) September 15, 2018
Or maybe we should be a little smarter then that.
Some are pointing out that this isn’t the first Laredo border patrol agent to be arrested.
Update: Juan David Ortiz confessed to all four homicides. He is a nine-year veteran of Border Patrol, according to Webb County DA. Still waiting on statement from BP.— Valerie Gonzalez (@ValOnTheBorder) September 15, 2018
This would be the second homicide investigation in Webb involving a border patrol agent from the Laredo sector. pic.twitter.com/3digC0mmq2
Not to forget: "He is the second Border Patrol agent in Laredo to be arrested on a murder charge this year after Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles was accused of killing a woman with whom he was romantically involved and her 1-year-old child."— Captain (@iSailor56) September 17, 2018
Thanks to Erika Pena’s quick thinking and courage, there is one fewer killer working for the U.S. government.
