President Donald Trump is once again threatening to hold the government hostage in order to fund the border wall that was a hallmark of his campaign platform.
The President made similar threats earlier this year when a shutdown loomed, but house representatives avoided it by passing a stopgap motion. Now, funding expires September 30 and Trump seems as determined as ever.
I would be willing to “shut down” government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall! Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT! We need great people coming into our Country!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2018
This contradicted statements Trump made during Obama’s tenure as President when the House shut down the government over the Affordable Care Act in 2013.
At the time Trump said:
Well, if you say who gets fired it always has to be the top. I mean, problems start from the top and they have to get solved from the top and the president’s the leader. And he’s got to get everybody in a room and he’s got to lead.
The internet was quick to call him out.
.@POTUS has decided that a government shutdown over The Wall would be advantageous to his party before the Midterms. (No, Mexico’s not paying for it!) I bet a whole lot of already vulnerable @GOP candidates disagree.https://t.co/aTxKM5aSRJ— David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) July 30, 2018
President Shutdown is at it again - how many times will he threaten to shut down the government—putting Virginia’s and our nation’s economy at risk, as well as the livelihoods of thousands of federal workers—before he realizes this is not a game? https://t.co/5vQz3f6vBS— Tim Kaine (@timkaine) July 29, 2018
Trump threatening another shutdown in Sept if he doesn't get his border wall & immigration changes.— Andrew Goss ✊USAF✊ (@Goss30Goss) July 29, 2018
We don't need a fucking wall, DACA must be saved, & his idea of immigration reform is kidnapping & caging children.
Bring it on, Bigly.
Trump is threatening & blaming Democrats for another gov shutdown.— Nathan H. Rubin (@NathanHRubin) July 29, 2018
Dems don’t control a single lever of government.
Rs control Congress.
Rs control the White House.
Rs control the Supreme Court.
How could a shutdown possibly be the fault of Democrats? https://t.co/aTkn1KVvhn
Many called him hypocritical.
I seem to remember in 2013 when you lectured REAL Pres Obama on how to avoid a government shutdown. Hypocrite.#WorstPresidentEver#PresidentSnowflake#Resist— Mr Generic (@Mr_Generic) July 30, 2018
"You have to get people in the room, and you have to get a deal that's good for everybody and good for the country."
But you told Obama that he was a bad president for letting the shutdown happen #hypocrite— Rusty Tiberius Fox (@RustyTiberius) July 29, 2018
Trump, you said yourself a government shutdown was the fault of the President. You need to stop blaming the Democrats, especially when they are not even given a seat at the bargaining table.— Dr. Mick M. (@Mickademous) January 21, 2018
The GOP control all three branches. Tell them clearly what you want, and move forward.
The American public will have to wait until September to learn if Trump is huffing and puffing, or if he’ll actually force the government against a wall—or, rather, in support of a wall.
