Walmart came under fire this week from supporters of President Donald Trump after it was released on social media that a third party vendor was selling shirts that read “Impeach 45.”
The site also sells shirts that say “Impeach Obama” and multiple products that read “I love Trump” and “Make America Great Again” but that didn’t matter to the Trumpsters.
They let it be known how they felt with the hashtag #BoycottWalmart.
@Walmart #BoycottWalmart starts now. As long as you keep selling Impeach Trump gear my family will no longer shop at your stores. A corp such as yours should not take a political stance one way or the other. Bad business decision on your part You just alienated a huge demographic— MAGAPatriotAZ??Kimberlie (@collectivecmgmt) July 3, 2018
As the hashtag took off, it became clear that more people were participating to laugh at the boycott rather than partake.
#BoycottWalmart was quickly taken over by anti-Trump protesters.
It is rumored that Scott Baio has decided to #BoycottWalmart by not picking up any shifts at the Subway inside the Walmart by his house.— Tony Posnanski (@tonyposnanski) July 3, 2018
Trumpster at home on Twitter: #BoycottWalmart!!!!— Edan Clay (@EdanClay) July 3, 2018
Trumpster’s wife texting: “I’m at Walmart, need anything?”
Trumpster at home: “socks, Crystal Light, toothpaste, Diet Coke, retried beans, Tide Pods, Raid, tuna, deodorant.
I can’t wait for the videos of the right burning all their Walmart clothes. Hopefully they are smart enough to take them off first #BoycottWalmart— Brandon Neely (@BrandonTXNeely) July 3, 2018
With all jokes aside, this Twitter user reached out with compassion.
Hey, friends, how about we don't post or RT pictures of fat people in sweatsuits, midriffs, etc as a way to try and make fun of Trump supporters boycotting Walmart? You know who shops at Walmart in sorry clothes? Plenty of my neighbors. Know why? Because it's all they've got. 1/5— Chris Schweizer (@schweizercomics) July 3, 2018
Can you imagine how soul-crushing it probably is to see yourself (or your mom, or grandmother) memed as a grotesque, or even more stinging, a grotesque accused of voting for someone they may despise? 30% of rural whites voted against Trump. You don’t know their vote. 2/5— Chris Schweizer (@schweizercomics) July 3, 2018
These folks are photographed and ridiculed for being dirt poor. Their clothing isn’t a lack of taste – it’s a lack of options. It’s the clothes someone gave them when they were done with ‘em. It’s what dries fastest when it rains. It’s what’s cleanest. 3/5— Chris Schweizer (@schweizercomics) July 3, 2018
You know why a heavyset 60-something year-old woman might wear a halter top to Walmart? Because she has to walk 3 miles each way and if she doesn’t the heat might do her in.— Chris Schweizer (@schweizercomics) July 3, 2018
You think these folks don’t know you’re laughing at them for it? Scorn's better than passing out. 4/5
If you’ve shared this or other stuff like it, please don’t. It’s dehumanizing and just generally a cruel, bullying, hateful, snotty thing to do, whether you mean for it to be or not. Thanks. 5/5— Chris Schweizer (@schweizercomics) July 3, 2018
And this heart surgeon thought maybe this would be something that could bring the two sides together.
Walmart exploits its own workers who toil for minimum wage and have limited access to affordable health care. It uses sweatshops overseas and destroys the environment. Maybe both liberals and conservatives can come together on this one thing. We should all #BoycottWalmart.— Eugene Gu, MD (@eugenegu) July 3, 2018
Many agreed there are better reasons to boycott Walmart.
For once there’s something I and Trump supporters can agree on with #BoycottWalmart. Walmart's low-wage policies cost taxpayers an estimated $6.2 billion in public assistance including food stamps, medicaid and subsidized housing despite earning $36.4 billion in annual profit— ♻️??? It’s funny how y’all are trending #BoycottWalmart not for the fact that they don’t pay living wages, and benefit off of damn near slave labor.— ✊??️??? (@ERanglero) July 3, 2018
Nah, for y’all it’s about a t-shirt against your fav dictator. pic.twitter.com/Iczo47RpA1
Walmart -— CrabDiving Podcast (@CrabDiving) July 3, 2018
- kills 1000s of small businesses with predatory, oppressive bullying - ok
- pays low wages, treats employees like crap, steals wages - ok
- sells products that use child labor, destroy nature, etc. - ok
But sell an "Impeach 45" shirt? OUTRAGE!!! #BoycottWalmart
#BoycottWalmart— nerdy kinky commie (@SexualSocialist) July 3, 2018
because of their shady business? nope
because of their mistreatment of workers and wages? nope
because of their effect to local town economics? nope
because they hurt the wittle feelings of #Maga cult children because of a #Impeach45 shirt? HELL YES
Americans should've #BoycottWalmart decades ago when Walmart destroyed countless American small businesses or when they refused to pay living wages or when they didn't offer healthcare to their employees. If it took Trump to wake people up...good. #BoycottWalmart— Katherine Green (@KateGreen72) July 3, 2018
It seems the boycott is unnecessary. Walmart has already said it will vet its third party vendor and remove any impeach shirts.
Now… about those wages?
