When it comes to Christmas presents for her family, Kim Kardashian West spares no expense.
This was evident when the socialite gifted her daughter North with the actual jacket Michael Jackson wore to Elizabeth Taylor’s party in 1997. Jackson’s jacket was reportedly purchased at an auction for $65,000. Merry Christmas!
But the ostentatious gesture became part of a joke in which the gift was confused with the shirt that President John F. Kennedy wore when he was assassinated in 1963.
More on that later.
Many denounced Kardashian West’s present for the 6-year-old, who was not around during the King of Pop’s lifetime.
But what further set people off was the fact that the media personality had the jacket altered to accommodate her daughter’s size.
“We had it tacked up so she can wear it. The sleeves are half-tacked up so when she gets older, we can un-tack the sleeve and it can grow with her, so she can have this for her whole life.”
“She’s so grateful and excited.”
People noted the irony of North receiving an artifact worn by the iconic singer when Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris has to beg for some of her father’s clothes.
A Twitter user who sympathized with Paris shared a screenshot from her Instagram in which the scion pleaded with the estate to acquire her father’s pajamas.
SHE'S HER DAUGHTER GUYS ! IT'S CRAZY ! She had to wait for having the things of her own father. And then we have Kim Kardashian having MJ's things in their closet for North. Like are we serious ? @ParisJackson apologize them love x pic.twitter.com/Gq4P0GeAjP— 𝐫 🌻🌜 (@soanniecatebem) December 28, 2019
it’s so f*cked up that kim kardashian literally bought michael jackson’s jacket for her 6 year old daughter meanwhile michael jackson’s own daugher has to fight the mj estate for her father’s clothes. tf is this mess— caroline (@thinkharryknows) December 29, 2019
Things went too far for some though when Twitter user @internetpain posted a photo of JFK’s bloody shirt to make it appear as though Kardashian West posted on her Instagram Story the item she bought for her daughter.
BuzzFeed writer Nina Mohan discovered that Refinery29 took a screenshot of @internetpain’s tweet and incorporated it into an article titled “Kim Kardashian’s Christmas Gifts To North West Were Puzzling,” convincing readers Kardashian West gave her daughter JFK’s bloody shirt for Christmas.
With things spiraling out of control, Kardashian West set the record straight once and for all by calling out Refinery29 for their false reporting as a “sick joke.”
“WOW this is obviously fake!
@Refinery29 I did not get JFK’s shirt. That is a sick joke that someone tweeted as a fake ig story that I never posted.”
Refinery29 has since modified its article by dropping the screenshot.
The top of the updated article now reads:
“This story has been updated from the original version. Earlier, it included a falsified Instagram image, which has been removed.”
Fans and even those who have been silently judging the reality star for her past exploits came forward in support.
Normally i hate when you address stuff like this, but im glad you did with this one. It was disgusting and stupid af for anyone to do this! The fact that anyone believed it is dumb as hell

People are truly idiots and that publication owes you an apology!

The sickest part of all this is @Refinery29 is glowing bc the site got a mention from you, and loving the social engagement and traffic bump (ad revenue!) from a story that was that’s false and clearly wasn’t verified. It’s not just grotesque but horribly inappropriate.

Terrible journalism, should verify information is true, before spreading misinformation.

One person’s humor is another person’s offense. But where is the line?
