Margot Robbie has finally shared some details about the new Harley Quinn spin-off movie. In a recent interview with Collider, Robbie, who is producing the film and will reprise her role as the villainous Quinn from 2016’s Suicide Squad, spilled some serious tea about the project.
Some details that have trickled out through outlets like Collider and Moviefone are that the film, tentatively titled Birds of Prey, will be rated R, will be helmed by a badass girl power trinity (female screenwriter, female director, and Robbie producing) and will feature a girl gang — most likely fellow villains from the DC Universe like Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and/or Magpie.
Robbie talked to Collider about the project:
Harley needs friends. Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space.
Cathy Yan and Christina Hodson have been confirmed as the film’s director and screenwriter respectively. Robbie’s been pursuing the idea for some time.
As she told Moviefone:
I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.

And here’s a clip of Robbie herself talking about the project:
Fans of the character were excited about the movie:
I have a good feeling about the Birds of Prey movie. I’m frankly just excited to see more Harley Quinn. Robbie was easily the best thing about Suicide Squad.

The versatile @MargotRobbie on the characters in the Harley Quinn spin-off 'Birds of Prey': "The ones that excite me most don't have superpowers". Looking forward to seeing this girl gang on screen ??? https://t.co/T9UzroDMDf

Smaller budgets encourage creativity. Deadpool was a smaller budget, R-rated movie. This is a good sign.

@MargotRobbie making a Harley Quinn movie definitely gets 2 thumbs up from me ???

Some fans are hoping the film will include Black Canary:
Black Canary or bust!!! I'm glad that we're getting this movie rather than the Joker-Harley one. https://t.co/35NQxMpti7

I cannot fully support this movie until there is confirmation that Black Canary will be in it, because is2g if DC tries to make a BOP movie without Dinah Laurel Lance I will LOSE MY GD MIND. https://t.co/lAyodoOAeG

And others have their fingers crossed it will be better than Suicide Squad, which didn’t fare so well:
And hopefully the script, dialogue, and over plot is good and not another Suicide Squad. Because that should be the most important about this film. https://t.co/JvuuCqAIR8
