The desire to have a memorable proposal in a social media age has lead people to go to extremes. In the past one only had to compete with their circle of friends, but now people are trying to top millions of others to make their proposal something their significant other will never forget.
Sadly, sometimes those extremes lead to tragedy.
Last Thursday, what should have been a joyous occasion turned tragic when Steven Weber, Jr., drowned while proposing to his girlfriend, Kenesha Antoine, underwater.
The couple was on a retreat on the coast of Tanzania, traveling to cross off items from their Bucket List.
Weber and Antoine were staying at the Manta Resort, which is a famous, luxury location that includes spectacular water features, including floating accommodations and underwater rooms.
Weber escorted Antoine to an underwater room with an observation area for a special surprise. Antoine waited in the observation area while Weber got into the water—and proceeded to propose.
While underwater, Weber appeared at the observation window with a double-sided letter, concealed in a plastic bag, and an engagement ring.
The first side of the note said:
“I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But… Everything I love about you I love more every day.”
Weber then flipped the paper over, which said:
“Will you be my wife? Will you marry me???”
Antoine recorded a video of the proposal. After turning the paper over, Weber held out the engagement ring.
Antoine can be heard in the background saying:
“Yes! Yes! A million times, yes! I will marry you!”
Weber then attempted to swim back out of the area by the room, but he never made it to the surface. Antoine reported that Weber had drowned while trying to reach the surface, and he never got to hear her say “yes” to his proposal.
Kenesha Antoine posted on Facebook the proposal video and several pictures from their time on their Bucket List trip.

In a tribute to her boyfriend, Antoine said:
“We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable.”
“I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together.”
“You were kind, compassionate, you regularly made me cry with laughter, and you showered me with a love like none I’d ever experienced.”
In her post, Antoine also encouraged everyone to support Weber’s family during this difficult time.
She also reminded everyone of the importance of telling those you love how much you love them and showing that love frequently.
Former classmates and family have arranged a GoFundMe account, to help Weber’s family in bringing him home from Tanzania, and to arrange for burial.
