Instagrammer Opens Up About Her Former Life Of ‘Tapas And Cocaine’ To Stay Thin Before Getting Pregnant

Instagram is only nine years old.  Can you believe that?

It’s true: Instagram was launched in October 2010 by programmer Kevin Systrom and software engineer Mike Krieger. Since it’s come on the scene, it has created some really interesting social and business opportunities for users.

For example, it is now possible to earn money by posting on Instagram by becoming something called an “Instagram influencer,” the function of which is to “leverage their trust and reach to influence their audience” in order to sell products for companies.

Influencers are known to charge as much as $25,000 for a single post–something companies have been happy to buy into for the sake of growing their client base.

One such influencer, Ruby Matthews, opened up about the pressure she felt to be perfect while she worked as an influencer.

“I need to be careful what I’m saying here, but in the [influencer and modeling] industry, everyone loves the [ones whose clothes are baggy],” she said to Instagram fans during a Q&A session held via her Instagram story.

In order to stay thin, Matthews turned to an extreme lifestyle.

“A lot of people never understood how I could eat and still be so thin, but I guess it’s pretty easy to hide an addiction,” she said.

“I did a lot of cocaine. Like, a lot. So basically, I just smoked cigarettes, had long blacks, and did coke. And in between, I had tapas. My life was tapas and cocaine.”

Matthews shared an old photo of herself to really drive the point home.

Matthews gave up the “cocaine and tapas” life once she found out that she was pregnant.  Matthews has had a number of issues with pregnancy, including a miscarriage and necessary natal surgery when she was giving birth to her second baby.

The support Matthews received upon being open about her addiction and extreme steps to keep herself thin was heartening.
