Mother Still Breastfeeds Her 7-Year-Old Son, And Explains Why She’s ‘Far From Ashamed’

The question of when and where mothers should be able to breastfeed their children has caused more than its fair share of internet arguments over the years. Another issue that seems to ignite just as much controversy is at what age a mother should stop nursing.

Lisa Bridger has two children whom she still breastfeeds despite the fact that her son, Chase, is now 7 years old.

Lisa explained that Chase and his younger brother Phoenix, 4, are both autistic and the act of breastfeeding is able to calm them and help them avoid medications:

Breastfeeding has prevented him having to go on to medication because it calms him down. It calms and grounds him and is a fantastic way to reconnect too.

Bridger tried using medications to no avail:

We tried melatonin but it didn’t work as I couldn’t get him to swallow it. He gets melatonin from my breastmilk. I can shorten the meltdowns by feeding him.

Bridger appeared on the Australian morning program Sunrise, where Dr. Ginni Mansberg, the show’s medical consultant, commented that the situation was “unusual,” but that “she wouldn’t discourage the mother from her choice.”

Bridger was surprised at the outrage her breastfeeding caused some strangers:

I’m amazed at what controversy natural term breastfeeding can bring. It just shows how misunderstood breastfeeding really is in this time.

Many Twitter users couldn’t get behind Bridger’s breastfeeding habits.

But others defended the mother’s decision:

Bridger, however, doesn’t care much about the public consensus. Breastfeeding helps her children and she has no plans to stop.
