Parents are taking to social media to lodge complaints after what many deem an “inappropriate” surprise in their children’s L.O.L. Surprise! Dolls.
If you’re unfamiliar with the toys, they’re small dolls with stylized large heads, round bodies, exaggerated features and tons of accessories. The whole selling point of the dolls is that they are packed at random inside of layers of packaging.
Also, that they’re so extra and that’s kind of amazing.
That blind packaging means you don’t know which doll you are getting when you purchase one. Children (and adults, let’s be honest) seem to relish the surprise of opening each doll and accessory, and many try to collect entire sets.
The packaging itself is boldly colored and busy with patterns and text, which might explain how these parents missed a key piece of information that may have lessened the impact of that “inappropriate surprise.”
L.O.L. Surprise! Dolls are anatomically correct – and it says so on the packaging. If you buy them on Amazon, the first bullet point in the description is a notice that the dolls are anatomically correct. According to the company, all authorized online retailers are instructed to note the anatomical correctness of the dolls in the product description.
Still, some parents missed that warning on the label and have spoken out on social media complaining that the dolls, particularly the male dolls, having genitals is sexualizing children’s toys and inappropriate.
In a now-deleted Facebook post, one person put out a warning instructing parents to check their dolls. They claimed:
“The boy dolls are inappropriate and obscene for small children especially girls as they are anatomically correct with no warning on the packaging.”
Other parents chimed in, calling the design disgusting, unnecessary, and a huge fail. Isaac Larian, CEO of MGA entertainment, which owns the L.O.L. Surprise! brand, doesn’t seem too worried about the backlash.
In fact, he all but dismissed it in his official released statement:
“All of our L.O.L. Surprise! boy dolls have been (and will continue to be) anatomically correct.”
“We believe in the importance of clarity and authenticity with our products and our consumers, and this approach has been carried through all of our products over the past 40 years. In the doll category, anatomically correct dolls have been available for many years.”
“We currently have a notification on all packaging, website and product retail pages that states the L.O.L. Surprise! boys are anatomically correct. After all, human beings are naturally and anatomically correct.
“Do we want to fight the nature and give false impression to kids from early age? Parents can decide this and buy or don’t buy it.”
Twitter seemed to feel much the same way – that these outraged parents were concerned over nothing.
Moms who are mad that the LOL surprise dolls have a dick…please remember that your male child you think is “too young” to see this….also has a dick.
The packaging is also labeled “this doll is anatomically correct”
That is all.

Why is this a problem? What is hard about saying boys and girls are different?

If this is what "anatomically correct" looks like I'm past due for a health lesson https://t.co/CBYTtluyMr
