Portland Gas Station Worker Accuses Black Man Of Only Wanting Gasoline To Start Riots And Fires

Dom DeWeese/Facebook

A man in Portland, Oregon, at an independent gas station called “Jay’s Garage,” was caught on video refusing to sell gas in a portable container to a Black man. The man claimed he was doing his part to prevent riots and fires.

In a video posted by Dom DeWeese on Facebook, he was refused service based on the color of his skin.

DeWeese captioned the video:

“This happened today at my neighborhood gas station. I come here all the time!”

“Me: ‘Can I get some gas please?'”

“Guy: ‘Are you one of those Black Lives Matter protesters/rioters?'”

“Me: ‘What!, why haha'”

“Guy: ‘You can’t get no gas here’ [and] walks off!”

“I had to take out my phone at this point!”

When DeWeese started recording, the gas station attendant again refused to sell him gasoline. He then threatened to call the police.

The attendant asked:

“Do you want me to call the police? We’ll do that.”

While the attendant is behind the counter to make the call, DeWeese continued to ask whether the location sold gas and why he was being refused service. DeWeese explained he needed the gas for his lawnmower and for the moles in his yard.

DeWeese asked:

“I’m trying to understand how come I can’t get gas. You’re not explaining to me why you are refusing to sell me gasoline.”

When DeWeese continued to press for information, the attendant said:

“You don’t watch the news?”

When DeWeese said no, the attendant stated he did not want to sell gas that could be used to start a fire or a riot.

DeWeese confirmed:

“So, are you picking and choosing who to sell gasoline to?”

The attendant replied:

“That’s right.”

Those catching the video on Twitter could not believe how the gas station attendant was unashamed of racial profiling.

People are finally waking up to the reality there are people who assume negative things about others based on the color of their skin and react accordingly.

For DeWeese it was a refusal to sell him gas for his lawnmower. For others it’s been denials of job interviews, housing, loans, scholarships, promotions, due process, etc… This is one small example of how racism and racial bias puts BIPOC at a disadvantage.

This is one reason why the Black Lives Matter movement exists.
