James Corden is in a tough spot. In a land dominated by late-night juggernauts like Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert, you have to be ready to carve out your own niche. One could argue he’s done that already, spearheading the massively popular carpool karaoke and pushing celebrities to perform on the streets with his “Crosswalk the Musical” Broadway performances.
This time, though, Corden may have gone too far in his quest to distinguish himself as the “make celebrities perform in ways you never thought possible” host.
On Thursday’s episode of The Late, Late Show with James Corden, Corden performed in a skit with rock group Good Charlotte. He pretended to be a life coach whose purpose was to ignorantly guide musical acts toward their next great collaboration. Good Charlotte’s future partner? Dr. Phil.
It’s as awkward as it gets for Good Charlotte and, eventually, Corden too. Not Dr. Phil, however, as the video shows the talk show host rocking out without a care in the world.
Viewers had feelings about both the good doctor’s singing skills and performance attire.
I can honestly say I could’ve never predicted that Dr Phil and good Charlotte would ever be a combination under any circumstance but ESPECIALLY not like this https://t.co/mjLszLGXEc— Mallory (@MalloryCollins) September 15, 2018

I'm sure there's a German word for the specific discomfort I feel toward that Dr. Phil/Good Charlotte thing, but it hasn't come up on Duolingo yet so I don't know what it is.— Jenn Reynolds (@_jennreyn) September 15, 2018
i hate every single thing about dr. phil performing with good charlotte. i want out of this simulation immediately please— h. (@shealynne28) September 14, 2018
Some people found joy in a 68-year-old man wearing Alice Cooper-esque makeup and rocking out on stage.
I'm here to rock this bitch! ?? pic.twitter.com/OFYjAHQFuz— Dr. Phil (@DrPhil) September 14, 2018
I never knew how much I needed to hear Dr Phil singing Good Charlotte’s Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous until now— Mila Fox (@milafox_au) September 15, 2018
Dr. Phil was just using his TV show to build a following so he could drop his SoundCloud mixtape on y’all. https://t.co/Hq6cen2tvm— SCTY ATLS (@ScottyAtlas) September 15, 2018
dr phil singing with good charlotte is a representation of me trying to join in with my talented friends— imy ? (@deadlydxll) September 14, 2018
As 2018 rolls on, we can only hope that Corden hinting at having Judge Judy perform next wasn’t merely a joke.
