UPS Driver Fired After Spewing Racist Rant While Refusing To Deliver Latino Man’s Christmas Package

Hugo Aviles/Ring Video

UPS’ courier service is a reliable part of Americans’ lives—in a digital age where consumerism is largely online. We get products delivered to our houses via such services.

We expect them to do their jobs.

We do not expect them, however, to withhold our packages from us based on their own implicit biases. Unfortunately that happened to Hugo Aviles, a Latino police officer from Milwaukee.

The driver was caught on a “Ring” doorbell camera completing a failed delivery notice.  The rant he went on in front of the camera was disturbing at best.

He said:

“Now you don’t get f’king nothing cause you’re a stupid motherf’ker.”

“You can’t read and write and speak the f’king English language.”

After Aviles sent the video along with a family member to UPS as well as posting it on social media, UPS released a statement saying that such language was unacceptable and the driver responsible for it had been fired.

Shirley Aviles, the package recipient’s mother, says the UPS driver’s actions were “malicious.”

“He’s never met my son…He’s basing it solely on the Latino surname…”

“I thought we were so past that. There are so many of us Latinos who were born here.”

“It’s ridiculous to think that people who think we don’t speak English because of our last name still exist.”

The package was finally properly delivered to Aviles’ house three days after Christmas.  However, the debacle has more than just the Aviles family upset.

Darryl Morin of the Forward Latino advocacy group said:

“As such, this is no longer an issue of a single rogue driver, but one of UPS’s failure to commit to operational excellence and more importantly, UPS management’s failure to combat hate within their company.”

While the company has fired the driver, systemic change to prevent this from happening again has yet to be announced.
