Back in April, while filming their 2020 film, Ammonite, together, Kate Winslet gave co-star Saoirse Ronan a birthday to remember.
The story of Ammonite follows an emotionally-guarded Winslet in her paleontological pursuits, inspired loosely by the life of famous paleontologist Mary Anning. At first, Anning spent her time searching for, recovering, and selling fossils to tourists along the coastline.
But when a man approached her, offering a job as a caretaker to his wife, Charlotte Murchison, Anning’s life suddenly shifted in a romantic direction. So romantic, in fact, the two Oscar-attracting actresses found themselves preparing for a scene revolving around Anning and Murchison’s first sexual encounter.
Winslet and Ronan agreed to not practice their encounter in-advance, nor to discuss choreography ahead of time. Instead, when the time for the scene came, only female staff were allowed on-set, and the two actresses navigated the scene as they felt their characters intended, in-the-moment.
To make the experience even more special, Winslet requested to film the scene on Ronan’s birthday.
Winslet explained of the request:
“I just wanted her to have, frankly, a great memory in her film life, regardless of how the scene played out or the movie turned out.”
“I knew that it would be great just because of the experience that we would share together. I knew that it would be very equal.”
“Every time Saoirse is in a film, I race to see it, because she’s so original. She can blush on cue which is almost impossible to do.” – Kate Winslet pic.twitter.com/ADZpK27wOD

Winslet seemed to be right, based on her comments after-the-fact:
“I just could feel that Saoirse and I had the same ideas in terms of what we wanted to express in the scene. We were on the same page in terms of that.”
Ronan agreed, stating the two actresses got along extremely well.
“I think a big part of that is because she’s very personable, friendly, and open. We were really lucky. Two women getting to come together, especially in the intimate scenes, being able to choreography that ourselves was a new experience for me. It was great to be able to do that with Kate.”
With their love scene teased in the latest trailer, fans of Ronan and Winslet are clearly here for it.

Is there like an inside secret thing when shooting a lesbian movie that we don't know?
