As schools prepare for a new year in the time of our current crisis, questions about how to best teach children safely have arisen.
With some political factions are pushing for schools to reopen as normal, others are trying to follow the advice of medical experts and keep home as much as possible, with masks worn where they cannot.
It’s a divide that the Elmbrook School District of Wisconsin found themselves trying to bridge when they had a district meeting to determine if schools would fully reopen, have virtual education, or some combination.
However, one parent’s suggestion has the internet rolling their eyes.
The above video is the full district meeting, but the point in the video you’re looking for comes at about the 54 minute mark. Heidi Anderson addresses the board and makes it clear that she is not a fan of social distancing or masks.
She starts by saying:
“We’re considered about the disregard for our civil liberties in your plan. Tonight even, you encouraged people to watch online instead of participating, which is their right.”
However, the truly unique viewpoint starts just before the 58 minute mark, after her public speaking time was up.
“Six-foot distance and masks are pagan rituals of satanic worshipers. Absorb that in. 6 feet. Where does 6 feet come from, people?”
“Why is not 3? Why is it not 5? Why is it not 10? Why is it not 30? Why is it 6?… I’m almost done. We’ve been very patient listening to all of you, so I’d like to finish.”
“We are Christians. Our children do not practice satanic worship. We don’t have them stand six feet apart from each other with facial coverings. Facts and data have been suggested here with no logic. These masks are not proven to stop the virus… I would like to finish!”
While I’m sure many expected anti-maskers to voice their opinion at this meeting, I’m not quite sure anyone was expecting this kind of assertion.
Hey, the satanic panic is back. The dream of the 90s is alive in Wisconsin apparently https://t.co/81Z4BMc0p0

Doesn't stuff like this and Q make it feel like we're approaching some kind of ultimate nutcase singularity https://t.co/1s1cESgnOT

For the record, the 10 feet or even 30 feet would be even better at preventing the spread of the disease, but 6 feet is the minimum recommendation to try and control the spread.
The number wasn’t pulled out of nowhere, instead, it comes from guidance by the CDC for providers to reduce the spread of infectious respiratory diseases. What makes this situation so unique, is that instead of the recommendation being for health care professionals, the disease is bad enough that they have to give it to the entire community.
Likewise, many facial coverings may not keep the virus out, and masks that can are in short supply and should be reserved for medical professionals. But the use of cloth masks led to an important discovery about how the virus spreads, and how on a wider scale, cloth masks can reduce the harm.
Of course, it’s very possible you can ignore all this and instead blame it on a satanic plan.
They're absolutely right – wearing a face #mask *is* #Satanic. It's following #science, and having consideration for others. Plus, some of them look pretty cool! Let's encourage all people to be Satanic and follow scientific guidelines. 🤘😷 https://t.co/EAQGg3UhqW

If you follow this logic, the “unclean” lepers of biblical times should not have been shunned. Lepers millling about with the general population would have been OK, because God would protect you.

She is both profoundly stupid and really confident in her assertions. Classic Duning-Kruger effect.

“Six-foot distance and wearing masks are pagan rituals of satanic worshipers,” said parent Heidi Anderson. “My kids are Christian they are not subject to wearing masks.” https://t.co/lL5o9IYrwf

The Elmbrook School District board voted 4-3 to have in person classes, 5 days a week. It’s unknown if Anderson’s rant had an effect on the vote.
One can only hope that whatever safety measures are put in place go better than other schools that have tried to reopen.
If you’re going to be out in public, please wear a mask and social distance as much as possible. If you want to distance more than 6 feet, please feel free to do so.
