Content Warning: Nothing bad happens to the dog! But there are mentions of animal cruelty.

No matter what the situation is, it’s pretty safe to say we can all agree that all breakups suck. The amicable ones are healthy but bittersweet, but most of them are heartbreaking, devastating, infuriating, or some combination of all of the above.

But most of us don’t use our breakups as opportunities to bring petty revenge fantasies to life, pointed out the “Am I the A**hole?” (AITAH) subReddit.

Redditor LocalJumpode9394 heard that his older sister cheated on her boyfriend and that her boyfriend broke up with her for it, but he was surprised when she showed up at their house with her ex-boyfriend’s dog.

But when he found out what she planned to do to the dog, the Original Poster (OP) knew he had to save the dog.

He asked the sub:

“AITAH for telling my mom that I’m disgusted by and ashamed of my sister?”

The OP was a witness to his older sister’s awful revenge plan.

“This started when my (17 Male) sister (25 Female) cheated on her now ex-boyfriend (25 Male).”

“After he broke up with her when he found out what she did, she stole his dog and took the dog back to our place.”

“She said she was going to put the dog down as ‘revenge.'”

The OP knew he had to do something to save the dog.

“I called her ex-boyfriend when she and my mom were out of the house. I told him to come over to pick up his dog and opened the door for him when he showed up.”

“When she found out what I did, she yelled at me in front of our mom, who didn’t try to stop her.”

“She said I shouldn’t have sided with someone else against her because she is family, at which point I snapped.”

“I told her, ‘You stole his pet and were planning to euthanize him, you crazy b***h. I don’t care that we share DNA. You are a vile, disgusting person, and I’m ashamed of being related to you.'”

The OP and his mom also argued about what happened.

“Our mom quickly said there was no call for that language in her house.”

“I told her I meant every word I said.”

“She looked really hurt.”

“I don’t feel bad for snapping at my sister, but should I have tried to hide my contempt from my mom to avoid hurting my mom’s feelings?”

“AITAH?”

Fellow Redditors weighed in:

  • NTA: Not the A**hole
  • YTA: You’re the A**hole
  • ESH: Everybody Sucks Here
  • NAH: No A**holes Here

Some were very concerned about the sister’s behavior and the mother’s support of it.

“NTA.”

“That’s crazy that she chose to cheat on him then got angry and tried to get revenge by stealing his dog in hopes of putting it down.”

“Has your sister learned anything? Does she feel remorse?” – Sinsemilla_Street

“NTA. Your mother needed to hear it. So did your sister. Congratulations for still having integrity despite living with them.” – Accomplished-Emu-591

“NTA! That was insane of her in the first place. She DESERVED every word you said. That’s disgusting and it’s best she did take offense to it. I hope she realizes what she almost did.” – Disastrous-Eye-7885

“OP, your mother is almost as bad if she supported your sister in the insane plan to euthanize the dog. Your sister is seriously awful, but your mom ain’t that much better.”

“Someone who supports a criminal in their plans is also culpable, which is why being an accessory to a crime is also, generally, a crime.” – Boeing367-80

“It’s clear as day who the sister takes after and who the mom sees herself in…”

“What nailed it is the dad/stepmom reveal, and now she’s lost another man, lol (laughing out loud). Sad to say, kid, but you’re gonna have to stop seeing your mom as a mom; she’s officially a whole person with character flaws and bad habits. You can still love her, but you won’t look for her for when you need a reminder of something nice.” – Due-Meet-189

“The only sane response from an adult in this situation would have been to pick up the dog, put it in their car, and immediately drive it back to the ex-boyfriend. And warn him about the crazy sister’s plans.”

“The fact that the mom here didn’t do any of this is as baffling as it is disgusting.” – MichaSound

“OP should have taken his comment one step further and pointed out to his mother that her willingness to stand by and let his sister do the heinous act raises a lot of questions about her moral values. Maybe the apple did not fall that far from the tree.”

“It is good that OP has a safer living situation to turn to. He is old enough to decide where he wants to live. If he wasn’t, his Dad probably could have used this to go back to court for a change in custody. If Dad is paying the mother any child support, he should go back to court to get full custody and get the child support cut off.” – Avebury1

“NTA, you called a spade a spade. She was going to take an innocent life because (checks notes) she faced the consequences of her own actions?”

“That said, it sounds like your mom might be part of the problem: is your sister the golden child? Defending her, allowing your sister to scream at you for getting the dog out of there; has your sister ever had to learn that actions have consequences before, or does your mom always solve her problems for her, enable her, and excuse the behavior?” – RNGinx3

Others hoped the boyfriend took this matter to the police.

“I would argue that OP’s reaction really wasn’t ‘drastic’ at all, it was the sane reaction to someone wanting to kill a dog for revenge due to a failed relationship. I hope the ex-boyfriend gets the police involved.” – mxzf

“He can file a police report against her. For theft of his dog since the dog is technically property. Plus, euthanasia without owner consent is against the Animal Welfare Act. If she tried to do it saying the dog was hers, that also would have been fraud.” – boomer_cavern

“NTA. Call the police! Holy s**t, your sister needs to be locked up.”

“NEVER take frustrations out on the pets, my god. If my fiance and I ever break up and he took our cat or dog and tried this, I’d be in jail for how I’d react.” – Worthwilling9663

“NTA.”

“Please report her. She is a f**ked up person and was willing to kill an innocent creature, and after she was the cheater. You should be disgusted by her and your mother, who supported her.” – Y4himIE4me

“NTA. Congratulations on getting all the morals and common sense in your family. Your sister is going to end up in jail doing stuff like that.” – midbossyyytyethe

“NTA, the dog was innocent. She was going to kill that dog because she faced the consequences of her own actions. Your sister is a psycho, and your mom is just as bad for enabling it. She deserves to feel every bit if guilt she currently feels, and frankly, I hope it continues to fester.” – MistressFuzzyLegs

“You may want to tell your sister’s ex to notify all shelters within 100 miles that if his dog shows up there as a owner surrender to call the police immediately because the dog is stolen and she is trying to get revenge by murdering his dog.”

“Highly recommend him to also contact the police to get a restraining order and file charges for stealing his dog… potentially breaking and entering if she didn’t have permission to have access to his home.” – Ok-Broccoli-2212

“Thank you, thank you, thank you for saving that innocent dog’s life. I can’t imagine their confusion. They inevitably knew her from while dating their owner… and for them to willingly leave with her, not knowing what she had planned… (shudder)”

“You also saved your sister from jail by stopping her before she could go through with it. If she killed another owner’s pet with intent, it is at least a property crime, if not fraud for acting as the pet owner, and also if not also domestic violence.”

“He should at least call the police over what she attempted to do, he should call area shelters just in case she tries to steal the dog again, and he certainly can get a restraining order against her.”

“I hope you get out of there soon, OP. Good luck to you, the ex-boyfriend, and his good boi dog.” – BacklashLaRue

Many recommended the OP get away from that house as fast as possible, to which he replied:

“My sister’s ex-boyfriend thanked me and took his dog back. He told me he was going to report my sister to the police right before he left.”

“I also just talked to my dad and stepmom. They said that I can move in with them. I’m packing my bags right now.”

The subReddit was appalled by what the sister had planned to do, and they were even more concerned by how her mother was supporting her actions.

It was wonderful to hear that the OP’s moral compass was pointing in the right direction and that they had helped the dog be reunited with his owner.
