Every Halloween, one costume tends to prove particularly popular.
As a result, we see it fairly often throughout the night on revelers young and old.
Some people, though, like to be more original, making an effort to wear a Halloween costume no one else will wear.
These same people don't tend to take it too kindly when they discover someone else had the same idea.
Redditor Secret-Insurance-747 came up with a costume idea for her and her boyfriend that greatly excited her.
Unfortunately, her boyfriend's sister also had the same idea for her Halloween costume.
Wanting to be more singular, the sister of the original poster (OP)'s boyfriend demanded she change her costume.
A demand the OP had no interest whatsoever in obliging.
Wondering if she was being unreasonable, the OP took to the subReddit "Am I The A**Hole" (AITA), where she asked fellow Redditors:
"AITA for not changing my costume when my boyfriends sister asked me to?"
The OP explained why she wasn't going to change her Halloween costume, despite the objections of her boyfriend's sister:
I (19 F[emale]) and my boyfriend, who we can call David, (19 M[ale]) are going as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider this year."
"We talked about it last Halloween, and I've wanted to be Rapunzel for the last three years, only doing so now because my hair matches."
"His sister, Lizzy (17 female), and I are friends, although not very close because she can be judgmental and I don't really vibe with that."
"She and I have not discussed our costumes yet this year but have talked about it with other mutual friends."
"I already bought my costume in September, and David just ordered his."
"When he went to order it, he asked to use his parents' Prime account, and that's when his mom informed him that Lizzy is also going as Rapunzel and is uncomfortable with it."
"I told him to text her directly because their mom tends to overreact to things, and now Lizzy's claiming she showed me her costume already and that if we are going to wear it, we can't post any pictures."
"Both of her parents are defending her, saying she's been planning it for months and people would get weird ideas if we post anything."
"I think it's important to note David doesn't post on social media, and I would be posting max one picture with just him in it."
"I don't understand why it's such a big deal to her either when we won't be going to any of the same events (me and David are going to parties in a completely different city while she's hanging out with friends)."
"I also don't think it's reasonable to ask us to change it when Halloween is like two weeks out; neither of us has time to put together a good costume, let alone decide on one."
"I was pissed, but at first was thinking we'd just change it and call it a day."
"After talking with one of our friends, I decided otherwise."
"Lizzy has a history of being entitled, namely when we were on a trip to Germany and she cried when she found out she hadn't been asked to join the upperclassmen at the hotel bar despite being too young to drink and not liking half of them anyway."
"She's the youngest daughter, so no surprise there."
"If she had been more reasonable about it, I very well may have agreed to go as something else, but she's trying to control what we do with OUR night."
"Am I the asshole for not changing my costume and posting pictures or is Lizzy right that me and David should go as something else?"
Fellow Redditors weighed in on where they believed the OP fell in this particular situation by declaring:
- NTA – Not The A**hole
- YTA – You're The A**hole
- NAH – No A**holes Here
- ESH – Everyone Sucks Here
- INFO - More Information Needed
The Reddit community was in agreement that the OP was not the a**hole for refusing to change her Halloween costume.
Everyone agreed that if Lizzy had a problem wearing the same costume as someone, that was her problem, and she should be the one to change her costume:

No one likes a copycat.
However, the OP didn't copy Lizzy's costume; if anything, it seemed that Lizzy copied her.
Whether this was meant to get at the OP is uncertain.
Chances are, however, that even if the OP chose another costume, Lizzy would still run into another Rapunzel on Halloween.
