Expectant Couple Called Out For The Overly Complicated Name They Want To Give Their Daughter

Redditor sailorsmoon20 has a roommate who is pregnant with her first child.

The roommate is a huge Game of Thrones fan and wanted to name her baby after a popular character.

The Original Poster (OP) was supportive of their roommate’s choice, at first.

When the they changed their mind, the resulting fallout led them to the “Am I the A**hole” (AITA) subReddit where they asked:

“AITA for telling my roommate that the name she chose for her baby is ‘ridiculously stupid’?

“My roommate (24 f[emale]) is a big Game of Thrones fan. She’s pregnant with her first child right now. She decided to name her baby, ‘Arya.’”

“When she asked my opinion of this name, I said I it was a good name with a good meaning (Arya means noble in Sanskrit), but a lot of people have named their kids Arya/Khaleesi/Sansa because of the popularity of GoT and it might be a little too common, not that it is a bad thing.”

“The next day, which was yesterday, she said she’s found a way to name her baby ‘Arya’ and not have it be associated with other Aryas running around or the show. How?”

“She said she wanted to spell it as Aughreighyah. I did a double take reading that word too, but apparently people are supposed to read it as Augh-reigh-ya or Arya.”

“She asked me how I felt about it and I told her that, frankly, Aughreighyah looks ridiculously stupid and she should just go with Arya.”

“She got kinda upset and said that she and her partner came up with this only because I told them that the name is very common. I said that having a common name is better than having a confusing name.”

“AITA?”

Anonymous strangers on the internet were asked if and where guilt belongs by declaring:

NTA – Not The A**hole
YTA – You’re The A**hole
ESH – Everyone Sucks Here
NAH – No A**holes Here

Redditors responded with sarcasm.

“Ask her ‘Arya being stupid?’ … I’ll be here all night.” – i_thru_it_away

“It never ends: Arya having a stroke, Arya parents related, etc.” – -Myrtle_the_Turtle-

“Arya winning, son?” – tsabracadabra

“Arya able to decipher how to read this stupid-ass spelling of a flash-in-the-pan trendy name?” – Lucia37

“Aughreighyah okay Annie?” – Dr_fish

Others took a shot at pronouncing the suggested spelling of the name.

“Seriously though, my brain pronounces that as Ohg-raig-ya.” – 0000udeis000

“Mine keeps saying it’s ‘ARGH! RAH! YAH!'”

“Maybe I watch too many horror movies, lol.” – TheUltradianCyclist

“NTA. You should not give your kid a name that looks like it could be a Welsh town.” – 0000udeis000

Some people gave the OP permission for brutal honesty.

“honestly OP, if i were you id just do it and live with my a**holery. NTA.” – jacksparrowpenfan

“NTA. And coming from someone who lives in an area where a high number of people like to come up with the dumbest ways to spell average names or just the dumbest names in general (actual examples: Kayelei, Tayslee, Jaselynne, Arik, and Mikhinlee), PLEASE do continue to tell her what a horrible name choice that is, and offer the suggestions from the user above as replacements.” – nelopolaris

“I LOATHE kreey8tyve spellings. It just says ‘my parents were stupid.’”

“I admit, when a kid named ‘Baustin’ bullied my kid, I told my son that it’s not that other kid’s fault. His parents are not bright enough to spell ‘Boston’ correctly, so maybe they aren’t able to teach him to not be a douche to the smallest kid in class.”

“The last time that kid was mean to my son, he told the jerk that his name is stupid and he should feel bad. Kid left him alone for a bit after that.” – ClothDiaperAddicts

“Normally you’d be the a**hole but A) that’s a stupid name, and B) she asked your opinion. NTA.” – Beets_ByDwightShrute

“And most importantly, this baby isn’t born and named yet! A harsh, honest opinion now can save her and her kid a lot of grief down the road!” – Sometimesasshole

“If she wanted distance from other children named that with that spelling then why didn’t she spell it Aria?”

“Still the same name with a different spelling.” – TBoogieBang

After reading through the comments, the OP explained how they plan to apply some of the suggestions.

“People have suggested alternative spellings like Aria, Ariyah, Arhya. I’m gonna tell her those and hopefully she changes her mind about Aughreighyah.”
