We can never be so sure who we can trust.

We're taught not to trust strangers, even if sometimes they might be genuinely good people who prove to be just the help we need.

While we'd like to think we can always trust our friends and family, not everyone can be so lucky.

Sometimes, our friends and family might actually put us into situations where we are unsafe.

Redditor duhitz_mika's father had a new girlfriend.

A girlfriend that the original poster (OP) had trouble warming to.

Their relationship became even more fraught, however, when the OP believed his father's new girlfriend betrayed him in a dangerous manner.

Something he had no trouble asking her to her face.

Wondering if he was out of line, the OP took to the subReddit "Am I The A**hole Here" (AITAH).

Unlike the similar "Am I The A**Hole" (AITA) subReddit, AITAH allows Redditors to ask for advice on issues that are not permitted on AITA, such as asking for advice or posting about ending relationships. Nor are voting acronyms required or a final judgment declared.

The OP asked fellow Redditors:

"AITAH for accusing my dad's girlfriend of hiding my medication?"

The OP explained why he felt he could no longer trust his father's girlfriend:

"I (17 M[ale]) live with my dad and his girlfriend of 2 years."

"I have a sleep disorder called idiopathic hypersomnia."

"It's basically the opposite of insomnia."

'Instead of being unable to sleep, I sleep excessively."

"My body just never feels like it's had enough."

"I sleep 14–18 hours a day, and I still feel like I haven't slept at all. It's constant, overwhelming sleepiness and exhaustion that makes it hard to simply stay awake, focus or function normally."

"School has always been hard because of it, and my social life hasn't exactly thrived when I'm the guy who could fall asleep anywhere at any time."

"I've been on prescribed medication for a few years now."

"It basically helps keep me awake enough to function like a somewhat normal person during the day."

"I take it before school so I don't fall asleep in classes."

"My grades are already pretty mediocre, so randomly passing out during class wouldn't exactly help my situation."

"My dad's girlfriend is aware of my disorder."

"As soon as he started seeing her, we both sat her down and explained my condition to her so there wouldn't be any misunderstandings and uncomfortable situations."

"People tend to deem me 'just lazy,' which is very frustrating considering I literally have an officially diagnosed medical condition."

"She knows about it all."

"Despite that, she's always had a particular problem with my medication."

"She regularly says things like I'm 'drugging myself with stimulants' or that I'm 'ruining my body'."

"I've tried explaining to her more than a couple of times that these meds were prescribed by a doctor and that without them I literally can't function."

"None of that seemed to get to her."

"She's even complained about it to my dad before."

"Here's where the issue started."

"I keep my meds in my room on the same exact spot I've put them for years."

"I'm a very forgetful person, so if I don't see them first thing in the morning, it is more than guaranteed that I will rush out the door without taking them."

"Therefore, I never move them."

"A few days ago, I came home from school, and the first thing I noticed was that my meds were gone."

'I never move them, yet I didn't trash that possibility, so I tore my entire room apart looking for it."

"Nothing."

"The only people who obviously go around the house are my dad, his girlfriend, and one of my older brothers who crashes home every now and then."

"My dad hasn't set foot in my room since the dinosaurs were still around."

"My brother knows better than anyone how important those meds are to me and has zero reason to mess with them."

"I considered my boyfriend too, but obviously he's in my house only when I'm there, and he wouldn't touch my stuff anyway."

"Which leaves only my dad's girlfriend."

"That night at dinner, I asked her directly if she had taken my meds."

"I didn't argue or yell or anything."

"I just merely asked."

"She reacted like I had accused her of committing a felony."

"She said she was 'offended by my audacity' and couldn't believe I would accuse her of something like that."

"Then she turned it into a whole speech about how she's always been so 'understanding and considerate' about my condition and how rude I was being by suggesting that now."

"According to her, the real explanation is that I'm messy and disorganized, and I lost the meds myself."

"My dad immediately took her side and told me I shouldn't accuse people without evidence."

"I mean?"

"What kind of evidence am I supposed to have?"

"A security camera in my bedroom?"

"The woman has spent two years talking about my meds like it's some kind of evil substance, but apparently it's unreasonable and inconsiderate of me to suspect she might have taken them when they go missing out of nowhere."

"She denied touching them and refused to talk about it anymore."

"In the end, I had to use my own pocket cash to replace the meds because I seriously need it for school."

"I still haven't apologized because I honestly don't believe I'm wrong."

"AITAH for accusing her of hiding my meds?"

Fellow Redditors weighed in, with some using the voting acronyms:

  • NTA – Not The A**hole
  • YTA – You're The A**hole
  • NAH – No A**holes Here
  • ESH – Everyone Sucks Here

The Reddit community agreed that the OP had every right to accuse his father's girlfriend of hiding his meds.

Everyone agreed that not only did the lack of sympathy from his father's girlfriend make her a prime suspect, but her passionate reaction seemed very indicative that she very well may be at fault:

"Sounds like you do need to invest in a camera, too."

"It won't be the last time."- JeffInVancouver

"If it comes up again, remind them: 'I didn't accuse. I asked'."

"Consider getting a lockbox to keep valuables and medicines in."- RugbyKats

"NTA."

"She's probably one of those 'I did my research' types that knows more than the whole medical profession on this and she can eff right off for shooting off her mouth about your medical condition and treatment."

"Is she an MD or a pharmacist?"

"Sleeping 18 hours a day ruins your whole life!"

"I have a friend who probably has idiopathic hypersomnia and has slept 18 hours a day, and I believe she's on Provigil."

"She can function now."

"I would be extremely upset about something like this if she did it."

'You are lucky you could even replace them, not just because of the money, but there's a limit to what you can fill per month."- Capital_Sink6645

"She took them."

"That's why she protested so hard."

"You can't trust her, and I suggest you use more of your pocket money to set up a hidden camera in your room to catch her trying to do it again."

"You also need to take your father aside when she's not around and talk to him about her reaction and your belief that she took them."- I-said-ur-stupid

"NTA."

'Report this to your doctor."

"Report this to your counselor."

"There are a number of medications for this, only one FDA-approved, and several off-label."

"One of the off-label meds is also a stimulant, which has high abuse potential (pretty much for those who don't need it for this) and high resale value and is a controlled medication."

"If that is the case, you NEED to be blunt and ferocious about this, as it would be a felony to steal."

"Get a locked container, ideally one with a combination lock, as if you are sleeping that deeply, even if you were wearing the key it could be stolen."- NewtInMpls

"NTA."

"Actually, you probably are accusing her of a felony."

"Stealing medication - I don't know what class of crime it is, but it is a crime."

"There's nothing wrong with asking, and perhaps a security camera in your room would be a good idea."

"I think you need to find another place to keep them, though."

"Like maybe in your school bag, so if you forget to take them before you leave, you have them with you."- asafeplaceofrest

"'OMG, dad! My meds are gone! Can I go get some new meds? I have school in the morning!'"

"Then, when you're getting your medication, get a small lock box/safe."

"Make it a habit to put your meds away, and take them, before you leave the house in the morning."

"Hide them."- Baudica

It's sad to think that anyone would jump to such unfounded conclusions about a medical condition.

It's even sadder that the OP's father so firmly took his girlfriend's side in this matter rather than his own son's.

Hopefully, the OP's health doesn't take a turn for the worse as a result of this.

Should that happen, his father will have no one to blame but himself.
