"You break it, you bought it."
So the old saying goes.
One could also use that popular saying in regard to borrowing as well.
It would seem only fair for someone to either replace or pay for something that was broken under their watch or care.
Even though not everyone sees things this way.
Redditor AdEmbarrassed7282 recently lent their boyfriend some personal property.
Property the original poster (OP)'s boyfriend managed to lose and damage while in possession of it.
Upset by this discovery, the OP felt it was only right that their boyfriend replace the item.
While he saw things slightly differently.
Wondering if they were wrong for feeling this way, the OP took to the subReddit "Am I The A**Hole" (AITA), where they asked fellow Redditors:
"AITA for demanding my bf to buy me a new pair of Airpods?"
The OP explained why they felt they were owed a replacement pair of Airpods by their boyfriend:
"My boyfriend Matt was going to a party out of town and asked if he could borrow my AirPods for the train ride."
"I was hesitant but I eventually agreed on one condition: he would bring them back just as they were."
"I made it clear that he had to take very good care of them."
"I am a student so I wouldn’t be able to afford a new pair."
"He pinky promised me he would bring them back safe."
"After the party, Matt came home pretty drunk and handed me my AirPods back."
"I immediately started using them, but as soon as I put one in my ear, something felt off."
"My phone didn’t connect automatically, which I first assumed was because Matt had been using them all day."
"But after trying to reconnect them, I realized they weren’t actually mine."
"They were AirPods of the exact same model, but they belonged to someone else."
"I got annoyed and told him these were not my headphones."
"Thankfully, I was still able to track my real AirPods."
"Their location showed up at a random address near where the party had been, but not at the host’s house."
"The next morning, Matt drove down to the address to get them and came back with my actual AirPods completely smashed and destroyed."
"Apparently, the owner of the house had found them at the train station after they had been run over."
"So, the replacement AirPods he had given me belonged to his friend Jason."
"According to both of them, I could just keep Jason’s pair because Jason already owed Matt money anyway."
"The thing is: yes, these AirPods technically work fine, but they are not mine."
"I also can’t get the 'Play Sound' feature for the case to work on this pair, which is something I used literally every day with my own AirPods."
"What also bothers me is that I only agreed to borrow Matt my AirPods because he promised he would return my actual pair safely."
"I don’t really feel like it should now become my responsibility to accept some random replacement just because he and his friend decided it evens things out between them."
"He also got slightly upset when I brought up the idea of him just buying me a new pair."
"He says ’he tried’ to fix the situtation, but I personally don’t think giving someone else's used headphones is enough, after you didn’t take enough good care of something that didn’t belong to you."
"He also told me that I should give him a break, cause he has a lot going on."
"He does think my reaction is valid, but hasn’t really done much to really make it seem like he is genuinely sorry."
"If I was him, I would’ve bought a new pair immediately, no question."
"So AITA for wanting to demand Matt to buy me a new pair lf Airpods?"
Fellow Redditors weighed in on where they believed the OP fell in this particular situation, by declaring:
- NTA – Not The A**hole
- YTA – You're The A**hole
- NAH – No A**holes Here
- ESH – Everyone Sucks Here
The Reddit community firmly agreed that the OP was not the a**hole for demanding Matt buy them a new pair of Airpods.
Everyone not only agreed that the OP was entitled to a new pair of Airpods, but that they should also seriously consider if it was even worth it to stay with Matt:

"He needs to replace YOUR property, per your agreement."
"Giving you HIS FRIEND'S air pods is cheap, unhygienic, and DISGUSTING."
"Anything other than replacing your property isn't optional."- HoneyBadger79

"NTA."
"Even after destroying your AirPods he could've salvaged the situation by letting you know what happened and handed his friend's Airpods for you to use temporarily while he got you a replacement."
"The fact that he just slyly handed you his friend's AirPods and hoped you wouldn't notice is very dishonest and I wouldn't be able to trust a person after they pulled something like that."- gunpowder_gelatin_

"This is more about his disdain towards your loss."
"Do you want to stay with someone so blaise about hurting you?"- Inside-Pepper-5988NTA-
"1) EWWWWWWWW."
"Why would you loan something that goes directly into your ear canal?"
"2) He gave you someone else's, which ewwww part 2 because it was in his friends ear."
"3) He tried lying to you."
"He didn't fix the situation."
"He lied and tried to give you a used pair."
"100% he owes you brand new Airpods."
"Why should you give him a break?"
"He didn't keep his word and he lied."
"He is showing you who he really is- pay attention."- KiriYogi
"NTA."
"Matt owes you a new pair."
"He destroyed yours and giving you a used pair that is not equivalent to yours is not okay."
"If they can't be used how you were able to use yours, then that's not equal."
"Tell him to cough up the money for a new pair and he can keep Jason's or return Jason's and Jason can still owe him money."- Slayed_Wilson

"NTA."- mountain_mist

"He owes you a new pair."
"And no, he did not try to fix the situation by giving you an old pair that doesn’t work right."
"He’s taking the lazy way out and whining at you to let him get away with it."- GOPsucksA**
"So you loan your air pods to your bf, on the condition he return them in the same condition."
"Definitely reasonable."
"He gets very drunk, loses / breaks your air pods, gives you his friend's old pair instead, and doesn't tell you."
"He only comes clean after you call out the changes, and when yours turn up destroyed at a strangers house."
"NTA."
"You trusted him, and he initially lied to you so you wouldn't know there was an issue."
"When that didn't work, he's blaming you for not being happy that 'he tried'."
"He didn't try, he lost / broke something of yours, took his friends pair and lied to you about it."
"Had you never caught the problem, he never would've told you."
"Regardless of whether you can get him to replace your broken air pods, maybe think about it this is a pattern of behavior."
"The Airpods are a sad loss, but his reaction was to lie and belittle the problem he caused."
"At no point has he apologized or actually fixed the problem."- TheGingerCynic
It's bad enough that Matt compromised the OP's hygiene.
Making it all the worse was that Matt lied to them.
Leaving one to wonder how many times Matt has lied to the OP before, or how much Matt will lie to them going forward.
